Series background & context

Blackberry Island is Susan Mallery's fictional Washington island community, a setting for women reconsidering friendship, family, work, and romance. The novels follow different groups of characters rather than keeping one couple at the center throughout. Their shared location creates continuity, while an inn, a row of houses, and local businesses give each story a different corner of island life to explore.

Barefoot Season begins with Michelle Sanderson returning from military service with injuries and painful memories. The family inn should offer somewhere to recover, but Carly Williams, her former best friend, has been keeping it running. Their damaged relationship and the inn's financial problems force them to deal with each other, even as new romantic possibilities complicate what either woman wants from coming home.

In Three Sisters, Andi Gordon buys a house on the island after being left at the altar, hoping to turn a fresh start into a new medical practice. Her neighbors, Deanna Phillips and Boston King, live in the other houses of a distinctive three-house group. Deanna's carefully controlled life and Boston's grief conceal very different struggles, and the women's proximity draws them into one another's problems.

Evening Stars turns to Nina Wentworth, a nurse who has spent years looking after other people while putting her own plans aside. Her mother and sister, Averil, continue to make demands on that familiar arrangement. With Averil returning home and two possible romances entering Nina's life, being dependable no longer gives her an easy answer about the future she wants for herself.

The island offers space to begin again, but nobody arrives without a past.

Sisters by Choice brings ambition into the foreground through Sophie Lane, who returns after a fire disrupts her cat-toy business. Her cousin Kristine wants a bakery of her own, while Heather wants college and a chance to move beyond a mother whose crises keep taking over. Their stories examine the cost of being supportive when another person's needs repeatedly crowd out your own, and the courage involved in admitting that work can matter as much as family.

These are relationship novels with romance, humor, and difficult emotional choices, including grief, strained marriages, and the lasting effects of betrayal. Reading from Barefoot Season through Three Sisters, Evening Stars, and Sisters by Choice lets the island develop around changing casts, though each book has a central situation of its own. The ongoing interest lies in women building more honest lives, sometimes together and sometimes by drawing a boundary with someone they love.
