Black Wolves

by Kate Elliott

2015

Disgraced captain Kellas is pulled back toward court politics when the fragile peace of the Hundred begins to crack. Old loyalties, buried secrets, and competing heirs make every choice dangerous.

Series background & context

Black Wolves returns to the world of Crossroads, but from a later and more bruised angle. The great struggles that shaped the Hundred are in the past, at least on the surface. Peace has been won. A dynasty has been built. But the cost of that victory is still sitting in the walls, the laws, and the people who survived it. This is one of Elliott's favorite kinds of setup, the moment after the legend, when everyone has to live with what the legend made.

Kellas stands at the center of it.

Once captain of the king's elite Black Wolves, he has long since lost his honor and his place at court. When the fragile order of the Hundred begins to fray, he is dragged back toward the palace and the old obligations he thought were finished. That gives the book a haunted feeling. The past is not gone. It is waiting in people, in institutions, and in secrets no one handled cleanly the first time.

The appeal here is less about a fresh quest and more about legacy. Who gets to rule after the founders are gone? What happens when a just victory hardens into another hierarchy? Can loyalty remain noble once it has been weaponized for years? Elliott threads those questions through court conflict, family tension, and the lives of younger characters trying to find a future in a world shaped by older wars.

The world itself still matters a great deal. The Hundred remains distinctive, with its memories of reeves, Guardians, conquest, religion, and transformed rule. If you have read Crossroads, you will feel the weight of history. If you have not, the novel still works as an epic fantasy about a disgraced soldier, a shaky monarchy, and a peace that may not hold.

So this is a series for readers who like aftermath as much as uprising. It asks what happens when the heroes have already changed the world and everyone else has to manage the bill.
