Black Paradox

Four people meet online to commit group suicide but instead discover a gateway to a bizarre afterlife. They find "paradonite," strange gems that promise untold wealth but come with a terrible price. A sci-fi horror tale about greed and the soul.
Series background & context
Junji Ito is famous for spirals and walking fish, but Black Paradox takes a slightly different, more sci-fi oriented approach. It begins with a grimly modern premise: four strangers connecting on a website designed for group suicide. They agree to meet in the real world, intending to drive out to a desolate location and end their lives together. It sounds like the setup for a bleak psychological drama, but because this is an Ito story, the narrative quickly veers into the bizarre and the supernatural.
The group is a motley crew of lost souls, each bringing their own specific baggage to the pact. There is Maruso, a nurse who is paralyzed by anxiety over a doom-filled future, and Taburo, a man haunted by a deep-red birthmark that disfigures half his face. Joining them is Pitan, a brilliant engineer who has actually built a robotic clone of himself, and Baracchi, who is tormented by a recurring doppelgänger. They pack into a car, ready to say goodbye to their troubles.
However, things do not go according to plan.
Instead of fading away, the group survives the attempt only to wake up to a terrifying discovery. The near-death experience triggers a physiological reaction that opens a gateway to a strange, spirit-filled dimension. They realize that their bodies—specifically their stomachs—have become conduits to this other side. They find themselves coughing up strange, glowing stones known as "Paradonite." These gems are strikingly beautiful, resembling marbles that swirl with an inner, ghostly light.
This is where the story shifts from a somber suicide pact to a high-stakes thriller. The characters discover that these gems are not just biological oddities. They are incredibly potent energy sources composed of crystallized souls. The stones are captivating and hold enough raw power to change the world.
Suddenly, the desire to die is replaced by a desperate urge to get rich. The four strangers decide to capitalize on their unique condition, entering the ruthless world of big business. The narrative evolves into a sharp critique of corporate greed, as they attempt to mine their own bodies—and the afterlife itself—for profit. It creates a disturbing loop of body horror and moral decay, showing how quickly human connection dissolves when vast wealth is on the table.
Black Paradox remains unique in the author's bibliography for this distinct blend of genres. While it features the usual grotesque imagery and incomprehensible phenomena, it leans heavily on dark humor and social satire. It asks uncomfortable questions about the literal value of a human soul, all while delivering the fast-paced tension of a mystery novel.
