Series background & context

Black Musketeers is Potzsch's young-adult adventure series, set against the brutal backdrop of the Thirty Years War. It has sword fights, secret groups, witch trials, battlefield danger, and a strong streak of dark magic. The books are written for younger readers, but the world around the heroes is not soft.

The main character is Lukas von Lohenstein, a young count's son whose life collapses when his mother is accused of witchcraft. His father dies trying to save her, and Lukas is forced to flee while his sister Elsa falls into the hands of the inquisitor Waldemar von Schönborn. Lukas starts with grief and rage, then slowly gains something more useful: friends, discipline, and a reason to keep going.

He cannot win alone.

In Book of the Night, Lukas travels through a Germany broken by war. Along the way he meets companions such as Jerome, Paulus, and Giovanni, and he hears about the Black Musketeers, a feared and almost legendary fighting force connected to his father's past. To find them, the group has to move toward the front lines, where bravery is never clean and adults often have their own plans.

The second book, Sword of Power, raises the stakes. Lukas and his friends want to rebuild Lohenstein Castle and make a safe place for themselves, but Waldemar von Schönborn is not finished. He has gained control of the Imperial Regalia, the sword, crown, and scepter needed for the crowning of a German emperor. The trail leads to Prague, where the friends must search the old imperial city and test how much their loyalty can bear.

The setting matters because the war turns every choice into a risk. Armies move, towns burn, and ordinary rules fall apart. Potzsch uses that chaos for adventure, but also to show how fear makes room for witch-hunters, fanatics, and people who use religion as a weapon. The fantasy elements fit into that world because the characters already live in a time when rumor can kill.

Expect a brisk mix of musketeer-style friendship, treasure hunts, sword training, magical objects, and family secrets. Start with Book of the Night, since Lukas's loss, Elsa's danger, and the group's bond all begin there. Sword of Power works best once you know what the friends have already survived.
