Black Hamptons

by Carl Weber

2022

In the exclusive African American community of Sag Harbor, the old-money Britton family clashes with the new-money Johnsons. A land dispute ignites a feud filled with social climbing, secrets, and betrayal.

Series background & context

Tucked away in Sag Harbor, Long Island, sits a distinct and historically significant enclave. For generations, this has been the summer playground for the African American elite. It is a world of manicured lawns, exclusive garden parties, and generational wealth that feels almost untouchable. This is the setting for Carl Weber’s The Black Hamptons, a series that peels back the curtain on a community where net worth is high, but the tolerance for outsiders is incredibly low.

At the top of the food chain, you have the Brittons. They are the definition of "old money."

They have summered in the Hamptons for decades, establishing themselves as the unspoken gatekeepers of local society. They value pedigree, tradition, and discretion above all else. If you don’t have the right last name or the right history, you simply don’t matter to them. They run the social scene with an iron fist and a polite smile, ensuring the wrong element never gets too comfortable.

Then come the Johnsons.

They represent the new wave of wealth. They made their fortune in technology and media, and they aren't afraid to flash it. They want a seat at the table, and they are willing to buy their way in if they have to. Naturally, the Brittons view them as loud, uncouth interlopers who threaten the established order. The clash isn't just about money; it is a war between history and ambition.

The tension boils over when a coveted piece of real estate hits the market. It’s not just a house; it’s a symbol of dominance.

Weber uses this property battle to ignite a powder keg of drama. The narrative quickly spirals into a modern-day soap opera that rivals the intensity of his famous crime sagas. While the clothes are designer and the cars are imported, the tactics used by these families are decidedly gritty. We see backstabbing, illicit affairs, and long-buried secrets threatening to surface. The polite facade of the country club set crumbles pretty fast when reputations are on the line.

Much like Weber’s The Family Business, this series proved to be cinematic enough for the screen. It was adapted into a popular miniseries for BET, bringing the visual splendor of Sag Harbor and the intense family rivalries to television. The transition from page to screen highlights just how visual Weber’s writing style is, focusing on snappy dialogue and dramatic twists that keep the audience hooked.

Ultimately, The Black Hamptons is about the lengths people will go to protect their status. It is a fun, scandalous look at how the other half lives—and how they fight.
