Billy and the Giant Adventure

by Jamie Oliver

2023

Jamie's debut children's novel introduces Billy and his friends as they sneak into the magical Waterfall Woods. It’s a high-energy adventure filled with sprites, giants, and a mission to save the forest's rhythm.

Series background & context

Most people know Jamie Oliver for his campaigns to fix school lunches or his casual approach to cooking, but his move into children’s fiction came from a much quieter place. For years, he spun elaborate bedtime tales for his own children, often recording voice notes on his phone whenever a good idea struck during the school run or a quiet moment at home. Those scattered recordings eventually evolved into Billy and the Giant Adventure, marking a surprising but welcome shift from non-fiction cookbooks to immersive fantasy novels.

The books center on a group of four friends who just don’t fit the usual mold.

Billy, Anna, Jimmy, and Andy live in Little Alverton, a village sitting right on the edge of the mysterious Waterfall Woods. For as long as anyone can remember, the woods have been walled off and strictly forbidden, shrouded in local rumors and adult fears. Naturally, the lure of the unknown proves too strong for a group of curious kids to ignore. When the friends discover a secret way in, they don't just find trees and wildlife; they stumble into a hidden community of sprites, boisterous giants, and magical disturbances that threaten the balance of nature itself. The forest is alive with a concept called "The Rhythm," a natural harmony that the children must help protect.

What makes this series stand out isn't just the fantastical creatures, but the very specific way the story is presented to the reader.

Drawing heavily on his own difficult experience growing up with dyslexia, Jamie insisted that the physical design of the books be accessible to everyone. The pages are laid out with wide margins and plenty of space, using a clear, dyslexia-friendly font that helps prevent the text from feeling overwhelming or "swimming" on the page. He worked closely with illustrator Mónica Armiño to ensure the artwork breaks up the chapters effectively, offering visual anchors that keep the momentum going without discouraging reluctant readers who might be intimidated by thick blocks of text.

The adventures continue in the sequel, Billy and the Epic Escape, widening the world and deepening the stakes for the gang. The narrative stays rooted in the importance of friendship and environmental stewardship, themes that have always been close to Jamie's heart.

Of course, he couldn't resist bringing a bit of his day job into the mix.

At the back of the books, readers find a selection of recipes directly inspired by the story. It’s a clever way to bridge the gap between reading time and kitchen time, encouraging kids to get their hands dirty making the same snacks the characters might enjoy. It grounds the magical elements in something tangible, tasty, and achievable.

Ultimately, these stories are about finding your own strengths. Whether it’s navigating a magical forest or navigating a page of text, the message is that there is no single "right" way to do things, just as long as you have good friends and a bit of courage by your side.
