Author bio

Bill Kitson was born in Bradford and raised in Baildon, West Yorkshire. Books were part of daily life early on, helped along by a father who worked as a wool merchant and kept a wide-ranging collection of crime novels around the house.

He was educated at Ashville College in Harrogate, then went into the family business in Bradford. After his father's death, he moved into finance and spent more than thirty years as a bank executive. Writing was not the obvious first plan, which may be one reason his fiction feels so rooted in working lives and familiar places.

He came to publishing late, but not to reading.

The real push toward writing came after a knee operation left him stuck at home for a while. He read through the books in the house, decided he might try writing one himself, and produced a spy thriller that he later fed to the shredder. The false start stayed with him. His first published novel was Depth of Despair, the book that introduced DI Mike Nash and set the pattern for the Yorkshire crime fiction that followed.

The Mike Nash books are set around the fictional North Yorkshire town of Helmsdale and mix solid police work with moorland atmosphere, cold cases, and crimes that reach deep into local history. Titles such as Burial Grounds, The Bleeding Heart Killer, Guilty as Sin, and Dead Or Alive show how much he enjoys a good investigation, but also how interested he is in communities under strain. The landscape is never just scenery.

He has never stayed in one lane for long. The Eden House novels, beginning with Silent as the Grave, lean into old houses, family legends, and a more Gothic kind of mystery through Adam Bailey and Eve Samuels. The Cowgill Family Saga, starting with Brothers and Sisters of Byland Crescent, turns to historical family drama. The Greek island books, including Sea Nymph and Sofia's House, swap murder scenes for romance, homecoming, and the slow pull of place.

He clearly likes stories where setting matters, whether that setting is a moor, a castle, or a sunlit island.

Some of those Greek-set books were first published under the name William Gordon, and the project has a personal side too. Royalties from the Greek Island Romance books, The Shepherd's Lodge trilogy, and related titles go directly to ELEPAP, a charity supporting disabled children in Crete. Away from the desk, Kitson has long loved cricket, as player, umpire, and administrator, and he once umpired a one-day international at Lord's. He also served as chairman and later president of Scarborough Writers' Circle.

He and his wife live in Scarborough on the east coast of North Yorkshire. From there he keeps moving between crime, romance, and general fiction, often with a little dry humor in the mix. It suits a writer who seems equally at home with a moorland murder and a Greek island love story.
