Beverly Allen is the pen name Barbara Early used for her Bridal Bouquet mysteries. She grew up in North Tonawanda, in the snowy Buffalo suburbs of western New York, and her fiction still carries that mix of small-town observation, dry humor, and affection for ordinary places. Even when a series is set elsewhere, she writes like someone who notices the local shop, the weather, and the way a town talks.

Math was not the final plan.

Early earned an engineering degree and spent several years in that world before deciding it wasn't for her. She has joked that after four years of doing nothing but math, she developed an allergy to it. After that came a less direct path: secretary, schoolteacher, pastor's wife, and amateur puppeteer. That range shows up in her fiction. Her sleuths tend to be practical women with jobs, responsibilities, and no wish to trip over a corpse.

She didn't move into publishing overnight. Early has said she started writing partly to see if she could meet the challenge, and her first projects leaned toward inspirational fiction. One featured a pastor's wife solving crimes. When that market proved a poor fit for cozy mysteries, she changed course, sent a cold query to a dream agency, and found a better home for the kind of clue-driven stories she wanted to write.

That turn led to Bloom and Doom in 2014, the first Beverly Allen novel. It introduced Audrey Bloom, a florist and wedding specialist in Ramble, Virginia, whose custom bouquets draw on the Victorian language of flowers. The setup is clever, but it also shows Early's style. She likes work and hobbies that give a mystery texture. Readers get the puzzle, the flower lore, the town gossip, and Audrey's funny, slightly skeptical way of handling chaos.

She followed it with For Whom the Bluebell Tolls and Floral Depravity, keeping Audrey, the Rose in Bloom shop, and the wedding world at the center. These are cozy mysteries, but they're not flimsy. Early likes clear clues, personal motives, and communities where everyone already knows at least half of everyone else's business. The crimes grow out of weddings, family tensions, old relationships, and local history, which keeps the stories close to home.

She likes puzzles, and it shows.

Under her own name, Barbara Early went on to write the Vintage Toyshop mysteries, beginning with Death of a Toy Soldier, and later joined the long-running Murder, She Wrote novel line with Snowy with a Chance of Murder. Across those books, the appeal stays steady: smart amateur sleuths, lived-in settings, humor that never swallows the plot, and mysteries built for readers who like solving things alongside the heroine.

These days she lives with her husband in Western New York. She has shared that she enjoys cooking, crafts, classic movies, campy vintage television, board games, and time with her granddaughters, and she has long been a cat person.
