Beth and the Bachelor

by Susan Mallery

1999

Single mother Beth Davis meets wealthy Texas bachelor Todd Graham through a charity date. Their attraction crosses the gap between his privileged life and her responsibilities to two children, making an unexpected romance a question of family as well as passion.

Series background & context

The two Susan Mallery romances grouped as Beth Davis bring love into the lives of women who already have households and responsibilities to manage. The Bodyguard & Ms. Jones follows Cindy Jones and an injured bodyguard, while Beth and the Bachelor gives Beth Davis her own romance with a wealthy businessman. Together they put attraction beside the practical concerns of mothers whose children are part of the story, rather than treating family life as something to be left outside a new relationship.

In The Bodyguard & Ms. Jones, Mike Blackburne has been wounded while doing the dangerous work he enjoys. Recovering in the suburbs feels like an unwanted assignment, and he has little enthusiasm for a quiet place where nothing seems to happen. Cindy offers to check on her neighbor's injured brother, only to find a man who is difficult to look after and much harder to ignore than she expected.

Cindy's life is rooted in home and parenthood, whereas Mike is accustomed to risk and motion. Their meeting brings those different habits into close contact, with recovery providing the reason they keep seeing each other. The tension comes from asking whether an attraction formed during a temporary pause can fit the life either person would choose once that pause is over.

Beth faces a different kind of disruption in Beth and the Bachelor. A single mother approaching forty, she enters a world far removed from her usual routine when a charity date introduces her to Texas businessman Todd Graham. His money and bachelor life make him an unlikely match for a woman with two children, but the difference between their circumstances does not prevent a strong attraction.

A date is only the beginning of the adjustment.

Both novels use familiar contemporary romance situations to ask what it takes to welcome someone into an established life. Nursing a wounded man and spending an evening with an eligible millionaire may sound like brief encounters, yet each opens a larger question about trust and belonging. Children, daily obligations, and the heroine's own expectations give the relationships more to contend with than the initial spark, while the men must be understood beyond their jobs or wealth.

Start with The Bodyguard & Ms. Jones, then move to Beth and the Bachelor for the second romance. Each title centers on its own couple, so the reading experience is a pair of personal love stories rather than a long suspense plot that requires many installments. Readers who enjoy single-parent romances, opposites attracting, and affection growing through everyday contact will find those elements running through this small grouping.
