After escaping an underground cult in New York, Pat, Coop, and Kate are on the run across the snowy Northwest. Hunted by Kate’s grandfather and his followers, they must expose his next plan while figuring out who, if anyone, they can trust above ground.

Beneath

by Roland Smith

2009

Pat O’Toole idolizes his older brother, Coop, who is obsessed with tunnels and underground spaces—until Coop runs away after a family blowup. A year later, Pat follows a trail of recorded messages to New York City and discovers a hidden community living beneath the streets.

Series background & context

The Beneath books are tight, two-volume thrillers about brothers who know each other better than anyone else—and still manage to keep secrets. Pat O’Toole is the younger, more cautious sibling. His older brother, Coop, is a restless tunnel digger who hates phones, avoids friends, and spends every spare minute underground.

After a nasty argument with their parents, Coop vanishes. A year later, a package arrives for Pat containing a digital recorder and a strange message. Following Coop’s trail drags Pat from the suburbs of Washington, DC, to the subways and forgotten utility tunnels of New York City. There he discovers the Community, a self-sufficient society that has turned old infrastructure into homes, gardens, and escape routes beneath Manhattan’s streets.

Life underground looks like freedom at first, especially to people who feel crushed by noise and rules on the surface. But the deeper Pat goes, the more he sees rigid hierarchies, secrecy, and a splinter group called the Pod that pushes isolation to a dangerous extreme. Beneath keeps its focus small and tense: narrow passages, whispered recordings, and a boy trying to rescue his brother without fully understanding what he has joined.

Above takes the story back into sunlight. Pat, Coop, and Kate—a girl raised her whole life underground—escape the cult’s lair, but leaving the tunnels doesn’t end the threat. The People of the Deep are mobile now, traveling in plain sight and preparing a new plan that reaches far beyond New York. Pat and Coop have to stay one step ahead while helping Kate learn how to navigate a world she has only heard about.

Together the two books explore why closed communities can appeal so strongly, especially to people who feel disconnected, and how quickly loyalty can be weaponized. There are chase scenes and narrow escapes, but also quiet moments where Pat questions how well he ever knew Coop and what responsibility siblings owe one another.

If you’re looking for a complete, high-stakes story you can finish in two novels, starting with Beneath and concluding with Above is a satisfying path.
