Fearless
by Mike MW Craven
2023
Former US Marshal Ben Koenig has a condition that stops him feeling fear. Years after vanishing off the grid, he is dragged back when an old friend's daughter disappears and only he can track her.
Series background & context
The Ben Koenig series takes M. W. Craven's eye for character and throws it into a full throttle American thriller setting. Instead of a British detective, the lead is a former lawman who quite literally does not feel fear.
Ben Koenig used to work on the sharp end of law enforcement, hunting dangerous people for the government. After a case went badly wrong, he disappeared off the grid, living under the radar in small towns and anonymous motels. When old ties drag him back into the work he tried to leave behind, the story kicks into gear.
Koenig's rare neurological condition, which robs him of fear, is both his advantage and his biggest problem. It means he will run toward gunfire and take the kinds of risks that would freeze most people in place. It also makes him careless with his own life, and sometimes blind to the emotional cost of what he does.
In Fearless and the books that follow, each investigation sends Koenig across long stretches of the United States as he chases kidnappers, killers and people who would rather stay hidden. The series leans into road movie energy, with diners, deserts, back roads and border towns flashing past as the stakes keep rising.
Craven still brings the puzzle element he uses in his British series. Koenig does not just punch his way through problems, he unpicks lies, follows paper trails and works out who is pulling strings in the background. The result is a blend of action scenes and investigative work that should appeal to both thriller and crime readers.
Along the way, Koenig picks up uneasy allies, from law officers who remember the man he used to be to civilians who get caught in the blast radius of his cases. His isolation, and the way he keeps people at arm's length, gives the stories an emotional pull beneath the gunfights and set pieces.
If you like fast paced books with a restless, permanently on the move feel, the Ben Koenig series is a strong entry point into Craven's work. You can start with Fearless without having read the British series, and still recognise the dark humour, sharp dialogue and sense of justice that link all of his novels.
