Bedlam Books in Order

Bedlam starts at street level, with locks, rooftops, and bad choices, then keeps widening until it feels like the whole world is tilting. The first book, Windwalker, follows Red, a cat burglar scraping out a living in a city of fog and muck. She knows how to steal, hide, and survive. What she does not know, at least at first, is how much of the city's darkness is tied to her own past.

Red is the kind of protagonist who makes the setting easy to enter. She is practical, wary, and used to trouble, so when a job goes wrong and a malevolent assassin notices her, she reacts like someone who has lived close to danger for a long time. Then the stakes jump. Her father is missing, children are vanishing, and the trouble in the streets turns out to be linked to a much larger conflict.

Bedlam itself is the hook. The city feels damp, grimy, and half feral, the sort of place where secrets gather in corners. But the series is not only about alleys and thieves. Above this rough lower world is the Above, and the gap between those layers gives the story much of its tension. One moment you are in a tight urban chase, the next you are dealing with sky pirates, elementals, and powers that belong to a bigger war.

That mix makes the series hard to box into one label. It has the soot and shadow of gaslamp fantasy, the momentum of an adventure novel, and the mystery shape of a story built around disappearances, hidden motives, and old secrets. The magic is there, but it is never floaty. It lands with weight. Choices hurt people. The dark keeps asking for a price.

Even with only one book so far, you can already see the kind of story Flynn is building. This is a series about survival, identity, and what happens when someone who has spent her life staying small is forced into the middle of a much larger fight. Red wants answers, but answers have a way of tearing open the things she was just managing to live with.

Go in expecting a gritty fantasy with movement. Bedlam is not courtly fantasy and it is not cozy steampunk. It is fog, danger, missing children, buried history, and a heroine who has to keep moving even when the ground under her no longer makes sense. Windwalker works as a satisfying opening while clearly hinting at a larger story still to come.
