The Bear and Mandy Logan books take Riley “Bear” Logan, a veteran of espionage work, and put him in a very different role: guardian, father figure, and reluctant small-town problem solver. Bear has done the kind of jobs that change a person, and he’s trying to build something quieter with Mandy, his adopted teenage daughter.
They want normal, but normal never sticks.
In Close to Home, Bear and Mandy relocate to upstate New York looking for a fresh start. Instead, Bear digs up human remains in his own backyard and ends up working alongside local sheriff Josephine McKinnon. What starts as one grim discovery turns into something wider, with sickness, fear, and a decades-old conspiracy that someone has spent a long time covering up. Bear’s past makes him useful, and that also makes him visible.
The series keeps using that formula in smart ways. Bear brings skills from his former life, but he’s operating in places where everyone knows everyone, and secrets are often older than the buildings. Mandy isn’t just along for the ride either. She’s sharp, observant, and learning how to handle danger in a world that rarely gives her the chance to be a regular teenager.
