Series background & context
The Bastion Club begins with seven men deciding that they will choose their own futures, especially when it comes to marriage. Having served in dangerous work during the wars against Napoleon, they are accustomed to relying on their judgment and one another. London's social world offers a different kind of pressure: eligible men are valuable prospects, and families are ready to organize their courtships for them.
The club gives them a place to plan and a circle of allies.
In The Lady Chosen, Tristan Wemyss, Earl of Trentham, has an additional reason to act quickly. He must marry within a year or lose his inheritance. He is drawn to his neighbor Leonora Carling, but her determination to avoid marriage makes his choice far from simple. A mysterious man's attempts to frighten her family out of their home offer Tristan a reason to help, while raising questions that cannot be answered through courtship alone.
The conflict brings together two different kinds of independence. Tristan resists having a wife selected for him, while Leonora resists being persuaded to marry at all. His experience makes him ready to intervene when she needs protection, but the romance still requires him to take her wishes seriously. The series uses this tension between taking charge and becoming a partner alongside its investigations, so the women are central to the decisions that shape each story.
A Gentleman's Honor follows Anthony Blake, Viscount Torrington, and Alicia, who is pretending to be a widow so she can chaperone her younger sister into society. Her family's precarious circumstances make that deception a practical gamble. When Anthony finds her beside a dead body in his godmother's garden, her position becomes much more dangerous. His social standing and investigative abilities may help her, but her concealed identity means the problem is more complex than simply proving that first appearances are misleading.
The tone is historical romance with suspense, explicit intimacy and occasional humor about society's efforts to arrange advantageous matches. London gatherings and private homes are places where reputation matters, while the club members' past work gives them skills useful when threats intrude. Each volume shifts to another central relationship, with the shared club linking the men and providing continuity. Begin with The Lady Chosen and A Gentleman's Honor to follow the main sequence. The pleasure of the structure is watching men who want control over their lives discover that a shared future requires something more demanding than a well-executed plan: trust, understanding and a willingness to let another person make choices.
