Barry S Brown Books in Order

Barry S Brown was born in Brooklyn, New York, and after a long career in psychology, counseling, and research, he retired to Carolina Beach, North Carolina. Before turning to novels, he wrote widely in the fields of mental health, criminology, and drug abuse, editing two nonfiction works and publishing more than 175 articles and chapters. He also taught as an adjunct professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

He did not come to fiction by the usual route.

Brown's professional life shows up all through his novels. He likes motive, evidence, and the messy ways institutions fail people. When he began writing Sherlock Holmes pastiche, he brought that habit of close observation with him and built the books around a sly idea: the real brains at 221B Baker Street were not Holmes or Watson, but Mrs. Hudson. In Brown's version, she runs the agency, Holmes supplies the respectable male front Victorian clients expect, and Watson becomes the steady companion who helps hold the whole thing together.

Mrs. Hudson, in short, gets moved from the margins to the center.

That idea first took shape in The Unpleasantness at Parkerton Manor, originally published in 2010. The book introduces Brown's version of the Baker Street household through a country-house murder, a second suspicious death, and a house full of class tensions and hidden motives. He is less interested in making Holmes larger than life than in showing how a supposedly minor character could run the whole show. He followed that debut with Mrs. Hudson and the Irish Invincibles and Mrs. Hudson in the Ring, books that widen the canvas into political unrest, public spectacle, and the social worlds around London crime.

He also likes to send his trio into larger historical settings. Mrs. Hudson in New York takes them across the Atlantic into a case involving J. P. Morgan, baseball, and the city's Tenderloin district. Mrs Hudson's Olympic Triumph moves the action to Athens during the first modern Olympics, where espionage, murder, and fake antiquities collide. In Mrs. Hudson Takes The Stage, Brown heads backstage at the Lyceum and folds Arthur Conan Doyle and a young Charlie Chaplin into the story. Mrs. Hudson and the Wild West brings Buffalo Bill Cody to Baker Street and shows how comfortably Brown can mix celebrity cameos with detective work.

Readers who warm to Brown usually seem to like the same things. The books are steeped in late Victorian and early twentieth-century history, but they never feel like homework. He writes with his tongue firmly in cheek, yet he pays close attention to the real events and public figures around his plots. The tone is dry, amused, and a little cheeky. Brown enjoys reminding us that public credit often goes to the wrong person, and he returns again and again to questions of gender, status, and performance without getting heavy-handed about it. If you like a Sherlockian mystery with wit, travel, and a strong running joke, his work has a clear lane of its own.

These days Brown still seems happy to blur the line between serious scholarship and playful performance. By his own account, he can be spotted in Carolina Beach in a cape and deerstalker hat, drawing stares and the occasional police inquiry. It sounds about right for a writer whose main project has been cheerfully arguing with one of the best-known myths in detective fiction.
