The town itself has been carrying old wounds for decades, and Anderson lets those older crimes seep into the present. Holly has to deal with a community full of guarded people, while Finn and the Carver family bring their own layers of history, loyalty, and trouble.

That matters because the series works on two tracks at once. On one level, these are romantic suspense books with strong chemistry and dangerous cases. On another, they are stories about isolation. Dark Waters shifts the spotlight to Anna Silver and Brent Carver. Anna's estranged father is murdered, and his last warning makes one thing clear: she is next, and Brent is the only man she should trust. Brent is a classic Anderson hero in some ways, damaged, guarded, protective, and not especially convinced he deserves anything good. Anna, meanwhile, is not a passive woman waiting to be rescued. Their story turns more intimate and more survival-focused as Anna is pushed into hiding and both characters have to decide how much truth they are willing to share.

The Carver family connection gives the two books continuity, but Barkley Sound still reads as a pair of standalones. What carries across is the mood. Anderson likes buried history, morally messy choices, and couples who have to build trust under real pressure, and this series gives her plenty of room to do all three. Compared with Cold Justice, the scale is smaller and the law-enforcement structure looser. The tension comes less from federal procedure and more from local knowledge, old crimes, and the feeling that the coast remembers what people want forgotten.

Readers who enjoy atmospheric romantic suspense usually do well here. The ocean setting is vivid, the family threads are strong, and the danger stays close. These books are not just set by the water. They are shaped by it.
