Author bio

Barbara Bartholomew was born on August 25, 1941, in Beckham County, Oklahoma, and grew up on a cotton farm in western Oklahoma. That setting stayed with her. So did the hard, practical rhythm of rural life, which later gave her fiction its grounded tone, its small-town texture, and its affection for ordinary people facing very strange things.

She has said that pulling cotton was enough to convince her that a college degree sounded like a very good idea.

Before she built a long publishing career, Bartholomew worked as a newspaper reporter. Later, when her three young children were home sick with chicken pox and what felt like every other minor childhood illness, she turned to freelance writing because it was the kind of work she could do from home. That practical decision became a real writing life. Her first sales were short stories, and from there she moved into novels for younger readers, category romance, time travel, fantasy, and paranormal stories.

Time keeps showing up in her fiction.

A lot of readers first meet her through The Time Keeper, Child of Tomorrow, and When Dreamers Cease To Dream, a fast-moving young adult trilogy about Jeanette Lacy, her brother Neil, and a set of timeways that send them across centuries and into real danger. Others come to her through Julie's Magic Moment, the young adult novel that won a major romance award in 1984. It is a very different kind of book, smaller and more contemporary, but it shows the same interest in identity, belonging, and what happens when a young person suddenly has to decide who they really are.

Home matters in these books.

That is easy to see in later novels like The House Near the River, where a Texas woman is pulled back into the 1940s while searching for answers about her lost brother, and in the Lavender books, where hidden communities, old houses, and letters crossing time make the impossible feel oddly intimate. In Everyday Magic, she returns to postwar Oklahoma and a family of women carrying a quiet inheritance of folk magic. In Finding Endymion, she moves into fuller fantasy, building a secondary world shaped by danger, refuge, and power.

Across all those modes, some patterns hold. Bartholomew likes outsiders, people with one foot in the ordinary world and one foot somewhere stranger. She likes Oklahoma and Texas landscapes, family memory, young love, second chances, and the idea that the past is never really finished with us. Even when the plot involves ghosts, future worlds, or time slips, the emotional center usually stays close to home.

She is also a mother and grandmother, and after years of traditional publication she continued on as an independent writer. In that phase of her career she has written mostly fantasy and the kinds of stories she most wanted to tell. That mix of long experience and clear personal interest helps explain why her books can feel both old-fashioned in the best way and happily willing to follow an unusual premise wherever it leads.
