Series background & context
The Banished Saga begins in turn of the century Boston with Banished Love, where Clarissa Sullivan wants more from life than drawing rooms and polite expectations. She teaches poor immigrant children, cares deeply about women's rights, and falls for Gabriel McLeod, a cabinetmaker whose class and background make him a poor match in the eyes of society. That first book sets the pattern for the whole series. Love matters, but so do work, politics, reputation, grief, and the daily cost of trying to live honestly in a world built to keep people in place.
From there, the story opens out into a larger family saga. The McLeods, Sullivans, Russells, Goffs, and Wheelers all become part of the ongoing fabric, so the books feel less like isolated romances and more like connected lives unfolding over years. Characters marry, lose faith, find it again, clash with relatives, stand by each other, and keep showing up when things get hard. If you like series where side characters slowly become the heart of later books, this one does that very well.
Boston is a huge part of the appeal. The city is not just wallpaper. The schools, parlors, workshops, concert rooms, political meetings, and crowded immigrant neighborhoods all shape the choices the characters make. Class prejudice has real force here. So do gender rules. Women are expected to be quiet, agreeable, and grateful. Men are expected to protect, provide, and stay within their lane. Ramona Flightner keeps asking what happens when good people stop accepting those rules.
The vote is never just background here.
As the series moves forward through books like Unrelenting Love, Resilient Love, Abiding Love, and Triumphant Love, the scope grows. The women's suffrage movement becomes central. Some characters march, organize, write, speak, and suffer for the cause. War, public scandal, and national tragedy press in from the outside, while old wounds keep causing trouble inside the family. The series also reaches beyond Boston at times, moving through places like Newport, Washington, and Montana, but the emotional anchor remains the same. These are people trying to build decent lives while history refuses to stay out of the room.
The tone is earnest, emotional, and family-centered. There is romance in every book, but there is also a strong current of friendship, loyalty, and chosen purpose. Readers who want a faster, more single-couple romance may find the later books increasingly ensemble-driven. Readers who enjoy watching a whole clan grow and change will probably be very happy.
It is best read in order.
Starting with Banished Love gives you the clearest introduction to the world, and each later installment builds on the marriages, conflicts, and shared history that come before. By the time you reach the final books, the pleasure comes as much from returning to the family as it does from the central romance.
