Series background & context
Bad Medium starts with a clean hook: a college freshman dies, comes back, and does not come back alone. After a car accident, Ashley can hear the dead, which would already be enough to wreck a normal semester. Unfortunately, normal is not an option for long.
The ghosts want something.
The first book, Dead Girls Club, turns Ashley's new gift into the center of a campus mystery. A girl disappears every November, a murderous poltergeist may be responsible, and a pair of hunters need someone who can actually talk to the dead. Ashley becomes that person whether she is ready or not. The story also keeps one foot in her ordinary life, or what is left of it, through her bond with Jax, the best friend who knew her before everything got weird.
That split is what makes the series premise work so well. Ashley wants college, friendship, romance, and some version of normal life. At the same time, she is pulled toward danger, toward the dead girls who need answers, and toward a world where hunters and spirits are suddenly part of her everyday reality.
The tone is paranormal mystery first, with romance threaded through it. Compared with some of Dawson's bigger multi-book epics, this setup feels more contained and more ghost story driven. The stakes are still real, but they are anchored in one campus, one new psychic, and one very nasty haunting.
If you want May Dawson with fewer kingdoms and more dead girls whispering in the dark, Bad Medium is the page to click.
