Joseph Souza's Bad Choices series is dark psychological crime fiction built around a deeply unstable central question, what happens when the person telling herself she is delivering justice is also a serial killer? The detectives around her are no longer distant threats. They are close, personal, and emotionally entangled with her life. A fresh series of murders begins to echo an older pattern, which means Gwynn is not only trying to keep her own secrets buried, she is also dealing with new violence that pulls her history back into the open. The result is a series that keeps tightening the screws rather than resetting after each book.

The Maine setting gives these novels a lot of their flavor. Souza likes the contrast between respectable public spaces and the damage hiding underneath them, charity events, family homes, therapy sessions, police interviews, and quiet streets where no one seems to notice how close things are to breaking. The tension is less about flashy procedural detail and more about pressure inside relationships. Marriage, parenthood, trauma, attraction, guilt, and self-deception are doing as much work here as the crimes themselves.
