The Bad Books return to the odd, secret-filled world of the Secret Series, but they begin with a new lead. Clay does not believe in magic. To him, it is fake, cheesy, and not worth trusting. Earth Ranch is a camp for troubled kids on a remote volcanic island. In Bad Luck, Clay still feels like the one camper left out, because everyone else appears to have a magical talent. When a castaway boy named Brett arrives and wants to remain hidden, Clay helps him disappear into the island's wilderness. At the same time, clues about old dragon legends and the island's past point toward a danger that could affect everyone there.

The trilogy closes with Bad News. Clay's problems become tied to the white-gloved members of the Midnight Sun, a sinister group familiar to readers of the earlier Secret books. A dragon reserve, old allies, and long-held questions all come into play, but the story stays focused on Clay facing threats that are much bigger than the mischief that first brought him to camp.

The series mixes magical adventure, mystery, and broad humor. Read the books in order, starting with Bad Magic, because each installment adds new clues about Earth Ranch, its people, and the larger conflict. It works especially well for readers who like creepy settings, oddball side characters, and heroes who have to act brave before they feel brave.
