Series background & context

The Bachelors and Babies series does exactly what the title promises. Each story throws a man who was not planning on family life into close contact with a baby or child, then lets the practical and emotional fallout drive the romance.

In Zina Abbott's Kendrick, that setup lands in Gold Rush era California. Kendrick Denham has built a life around work, independence, and the assumption that marriage is not in the cards. Then the sheriff hands him a six-month-old baby girl and tells him the mother named him as the father. At the same time, Lydia Meyer and her sons are trying to start over after being forced from their home.

That mix of uncertainty, gossip, and sheer necessity gives the story its shape. A baby is not just cute in this kind of series. A child changes where people live, how they earn a living, what sort of help they need, and who is willing to stand with them in public.

The wider multi-author series tends to favor capable but surprised men, women who have already been tested by life, and communities quick to judge. Abbott's contribution fits that pattern well, while also giving readers her usual attention to historical work and place.

If you like Western romance with instant responsibilities and families built the hard way, Bachelors and Babies is the kind of series that scratches that itch.
