Baby Books in Order

The Baby books are best thought of as a run of lively connected standalones rather than one tightly plotted saga.

What links them is tone. These are late 1990s and early 2000s Susan Andersen romances, bright, funny, sexy, and usually nudged along by some outside trouble. Mistaken identity, bodyguard duty, old heartbreak, bad reputations, family mess, and a little suspense all have a place here. The books move fast, but they still leave room for character.

The range is part of the fun. Baby, I'm Yours throws a practical schoolteacher into chaos when a bounty hunter mistakes her for her trouble-prone twin. Be My Baby moves to New Orleans, where a proper young hotel executive and a cop assigned to protect her collide almost immediately. Baby, Don't Go brings together former lovers under tense new circumstances, with danger making close quarters even more complicated. All Shook Up shifts to a mountain-lodge setting and pairs a man with a past with a woman carrying a reputation of her own.

Andersen likes her lovers stubborn.

That stubbornness gives the books their snap. The heroines are not shrinking violets, and the heroes, even when they are overbearing at first, usually have to learn that brute confidence is not the same thing as understanding someone. There is a lot of verbal sparring, a fair amount of longing, and a repeated interest in how people get trapped by the roles others assign them.

The settings change from book to book, which helps keep the series fresh. One story may feel like a screwball road romance, another like a city-set bodyguard tale, another like a snowy emotional reset. But the emotional pattern is familiar in a good way. Two people start off wrong for each other, or at least convinced they are, and then the book goes to work proving otherwise.

These novels also show Andersen settling into the mix many readers still come to her for: humor, chemistry, suspense in manageable doses, and characters who are a little bruised but still game for the fight. If you like romance that is playful without being flimsy, this is a good corner of her backlist.

They are mostly easy to read on their own, but in order they give a nice sense of her style sharpening from book to book. You can see the confidence grow, and that is part of the appeal.
