Author bio

B. A. Paris is a Franco-Irish author of psychological thrillers and domestic suspense. Born in 1958, she was raised in England before moving to France, where she spent much of her adult life. Her novels explore the danger that can hide inside an apparently comfortable marriage, an ordinary friendship or a carefully chosen new home.

Before becoming a novelist, Paris worked as a trader in finance and later retrained as an English teacher. She and her husband ran a language school while bringing up five daughters. Family life occupied much of her time, and although she wanted to write, the opportunity to pursue a novel came later, as her children became more independent.

She began writing after turning fifty.

One of her daughters encouraged her to enter a competition that required a full-length novel. Paris did not win, but the experience started a habit she was reluctant to give up, even when early manuscripts failed to find an agent. She has described writing several novels before publication and continuing with a new story whenever another rejection arrived.

Her debut, Behind Closed Doors, was published in 2016 and introduced readers to Jack and Grace, a couple whose polished public life conceals a frightening private reality. Its success put Paris on the New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller lists. The novel established her interest in psychological control, isolation and the difficulty of persuading outsiders that a seemingly perfect relationship is dangerous.

The Breakdown followed in 2017, centring on a woman troubled by a murder, gaps in her memory and the feeling that someone is watching her. Bring Me Back turns a disappearance into a threat to a later relationship, while The Therapist makes an attractive neighbourhood and a house's past the source of uncertainty. These are separate stories, so readers can choose a premise that interests them without following a continuing cast.

Not every book puts the same kind of pressure on its characters. The Dilemma follows a couple keeping painful information from each other during a long-awaited birthday celebration, asking what it means to protect someone from the truth. The Prisoner uses confinement and a troubled marriage, and The Guest examines the unease created when a friend's stay crosses personal boundaries and old secrets begin to surface.

Her second novel became the film Blackwater Lane.

Paris has said that everyday incidents and people she meets can set her imagination working. In interviews, she has described beginning with an opening scene and usually an ending, while allowing the story between them to develop as she writes. Her daughters and sister have also served as early readers, offering frank responses when a passage feels unconvincing or slow.

She now writes from the Hampshire countryside, and When I Kill You continues her interest in obsession, hidden identities and the uncertain boundary between watcher and watched. Her books have been translated into more than forty languages. The settings and plots vary, but they return to a recognisable concern: how well we know the people closest to us, and what happens when that confidence begins to fail.
