Avalon Books in Order

The Avalon books use legend and history as raw material, then move the camera toward the women whose choices shape the story. The best-known entry is The Mists of Avalon, an Arthurian novel told largely through Morgaine, Gwenhwyfar, Viviane, and other women close to Camelot. Knights, battles, Merlin, and the Grail are all present, but they are not the only story.

The series asks what Arthur's rise and fall looked like from the edges of the Round Table.

Other books travel back before Arthur's time. The Forest House is set in Roman Britain and follows Eilan, a young woman called to serve as a priestess while her love for the Roman-connected Gaius pulls her toward a life she was not meant to choose. Lady of Avalon follows several women across generations as Roman rule fades, Christianity gains ground, and Avalon must protect its traditions.

Priestess of Avalon moves through another troubled period of Roman Britain. Its central characters face political danger, religious change, and the difficult work of keeping old knowledge alive when the outside world has little patience for it. Across the series, Avalon is not simply a magical island. It is an idea, a sanctuary, a religious tradition, and a responsibility passed from one generation to another.

That responsibility has a cost.

The tone is historical fantasy with romance, court politics, religious conflict, and a steady thread of magic. The books are especially interested in divided loyalties. Characters may love their family but resist its plans, honor an old faith while living among converts, or want peace while being pushed toward violence. That makes the larger legends feel personal.

Publication order is a good place to begin, starting with The Mists of Avalon if you want the major Arthurian story first. Readers who prefer the earliest point in the internal timeline can begin with the pre-Arthurian novels instead. Either way, expect a broad, women-centered journey through Britain at moments when power, faith, and identity are all being renegotiated.
