Series background & context

The Atlanta Burning books take Alan Lee's crime writing in a sharper, more openly speculative direction. The premise is simple and nasty in the best way. Police are quitting, crime is climbing, and the city responds by bringing back bounty hunting. In The Wild South, that choice turns modern Atlanta into something closer to a frontier town, only with highways, apartment towers, and collapsing civic trust instead of horses and saloons.

It is a crime thriller with a Western pulse.

The central figure is Johnny Young, a former college football star who is no longer headed toward anything glamorous. He pays the bills with poker and tries to stay loose, detached, and out of serious responsibility. That gets harder once Atlanta starts paying civilians to hunt fugitives. Johnny is pulled into the new order alongside Bella Adams, a skip-tracer with the skill and nerve the job demands, plus a wider circle of roommates, criminals, and hustlers who all see the city's breakdown as a chance to get rich or get even.

That setup gives the series its real tension. On one level, these are chase novels. Names go on lists, prices go up, and people decide how much danger they are willing to accept for a payout. On another level, the books are about what happens when public institutions stop holding. The mayor wants control, federal pressure keeps rising, and corruption slips into every opening. In Hell for Leather, the first bounty mandate's fragile peace falls apart, the rewards get bigger, and one new name on the list changes everything.

Everybody is armed, but very few people are steady.

Atlanta matters in a different way than Roanoke does in Lee's other series. This city is bigger, hotter, meaner, and less intimate. Traffic, politics, neighborhood lines, and public panic all feed the action. The tone is fast and rough, but not hopeless. Johnny is still deciding what kind of man he wants to be, and that question gives the series its center. The best scenes are not just about catching someone. They are about whether decency, loyalty, and restraint still mean anything when the rules are being rewritten in real time.

Because there are only two books, this is an easy series to try. Start with The Wild South, then move straight to Hell for Leather. If you like dystopian crime fiction, bounty-hunter plots, and stories where civic failure turns personal almost overnight, Atlanta Burning is the Alan Lee series that leans hardest into that idea.
