Series background & context

The At First Sight books are contemporary queer romances set around the same friend group in Tucson, Arizona. They are funny, loud, and a little chaotic, but the real engine is chosen family. Bartenders, drag performers, students, exasperated lovers, and impossible relatives keep colliding, and every collision turns into another story about what it means to be seen clearly.

The series opens with Tell Me It's Real, which gives you Paul Auster, a sharp-tongued office worker with low expectations and a habit of protecting himself with jokes. His romance with Vince Taylor sets the tone for the whole run. These are not cool, polished love stories. They are messy, affectionate, and full of side characters who will absolutely make things worse before they make them better.

Then The Queen and the Homo Jock King shifts focus to Sandy, who performs as Helena Handbasket, and leans harder into the wider Tucson queer scene. The drag club Jack It matters here, not just as a backdrop, but as a community space people are trying to protect. That gives the books a slightly bigger world than a simple couple-centered rom-com. Love is important, but so are jobs, friendships, city politics, and the places where people get to be themselves.

This is a friend-group series through and through.

Until You works like a breather and a payoff, following Paul and Vince as they try to plan a wedding without being swallowed by family drama and terrible decisions. By the time you get to Why We Fight, the scope widens again. Corey, who also performs as Kori, is younger than the leads in the earlier books, and his story brings in questions of identity, mentorship, queer community, and what it means to grow into yourself without sanding off the parts that make you distinct.

What carries across all four books is Klune's fondness for banter, outrageous side characters, and emotional honesty hiding under the jokes. Expect romantic comedy energy, but not a weightless version of it. The series makes room for insecurity, grief, anger, and public life, especially in the last book. If you like interconnected romances where everyone knows everyone's business, where the humor is big and the heart is bigger, this is the kind of series that settles in quickly.
