Author bio
Miya Kazuki is a Japanese novelist best known for Ascendance of a Bookworm, the long-running fantasy about a book-loving young woman reborn into a world where books are rare, expensive, and mostly out of reach. It is a premise that gives the series its engine from page one: Myne does not simply wish for a better life. She wants to read.
Kazuki had written for years, then returned to the habit after gaining more time when her children began kindergarten. She has described those quiet hours as a chance to read and write again. Out of several story ideas she had been considering, one became the starting point for Ascendance of a Bookworm.
The story first appeared online in 2013. Its web-novel run continued until 2017, while a print edition began in 2015. That gave Kazuki room to build a very large setting, one shaped by class, religion, trade, magic, family ties, and the everyday work behind objects people often take for granted.
Books are never just background decoration here.
The early volumes follow Myne as she experiments with paper, ink, and other ways to bring reading within reach of ordinary people. The story gradually grows beyond the lower city of Ehrenfest, taking her through the temple, noble society, the Royal Academy, and the wider politics of Yurgenschmidt. Along the way, Myne becomes Rozemyne, but her stubborn love of books remains the thing that keeps pulling her into trouble.
Kazuki's approach is especially interested in process. Readers see plans hit practical limits, from money and materials to customs and power structures. A new craft or business idea can change a household, a town, or a duchy. That attention to consequences is a big part of why the series feels so lived-in, even when the plot turns toward mana, gods, and high-stakes political conflict.
The main light-novel story is divided into five parts and runs for thirty-three volumes. It was illustrated by You Shiina in print, and its success led to manga adaptations, an anime adaptation, fanbooks, short-story collections, and further stories set in the same world. Kazuki has also continued the setting through Hannelore's Fifth Year at the Royal Academy, which shifts attention to another character after the main story.
The scale gets bigger, but the series never entirely loses sight of its small pleasures: making paper, sharing a meal, reading in a quiet room, or finding people willing to help with an impossible plan.
Kazuki's work balances those domestic details with a plot that keeps asking what happens when a determined child gains influence in a rigid society. Myne and Rozemyne can be impulsive, earnest, funny, and exhausting to everyone around them. The people who care for her often spend as much time managing the chaos as they do helping her chase her next dream.
For readers, Ascendance of a Bookworm offers a fantasy world built one practical step at a time. It starts with a girl who wants a book and follows that wish farther than anyone, including Myne herself, could have expected.
