Obsession
by Jennifer L Armentrout
2013
Arum warrior Hunter is ordered to protect Serena Cross after she witnesses a powerful Luxen kill her best friend. Thrown together in hiding, the ruthless alien and terrified human ignite a volatile attraction while dodging assassins, corrupt officials, and the war between their species.
Series background & context
The Arum line currently consists of a single full‑length novel, Obsession, but it casts a long shadow across the Lux universe. Where the Lux books show events from the perspective of light‑based aliens hiding among humans, Obsession flips the camera to their sworn enemies: the Arum.
Hunter, the male lead, is an Arum who has spent his life fighting Luxen and feeding on their energy. He’s lethal, arrogant, and not remotely interested in being anyone’s hero. The only reason he works with the Department of Defense is that it lets him do what he’s good at—killing—with a veneer of legitimacy.
Serena Cross is human, and until recently she thought aliens were the stuff of tabloid covers. When she witnesses her best friend’s murder at the hands of a Luxen and realizes powerful people will kill to bury the truth, she becomes a target. The government’s answer is to assign Hunter to protect her from the very beings he’s been hunting.
Forced into close quarters, Hunter and Serena clash hard. She doesn’t trust a creature who treats death so casually; he doesn’t understand why he cares what happens to a single human when entire planets have burned. Their relationship is intense, explicit, and wrapped in constant danger as rogue Luxen, corrupt officials, and Hunter’s own instincts close in.
Obsession is darker and more adult than the YA Lux novels. Its view of the Luxen/Arum conflict is less black‑and‑white, showing that there are monsters and decent people on both sides. Appearances by familiar characters and references to Project Daedalus tie the story firmly into the larger continuity.
Readers don’t need to pick up Obsession to follow the main Lux or Origin arcs, but doing so adds texture to that world. It’s a good fit for anyone who enjoyed the original series but wanted to see what the war looks like from the other side—and what happens when the “bad guy” starts to care more than he ever intended.
