Series background & context

The Arisen series drops readers into a full spectrum zombie apocalypse and asks what happens if the very best special operators on Earth are all that stands between humanity and extinction. At its heart is Alpha team, an international mix of Tier 1 soldiers brought together just as a virulent new pathogen wipes out most of the planet.

The early books open in Fortress Britain, the last major nation to seal its borders after a catastrophic terror attack. Fifty million survivors cling to life behind hardened defenses while seven billion infected, known as zulus, roam the rest of the world. From the start, Fuchs and co author Glynn James balance large scale collapse with tight focus on small units under impossible pressure.

Alpha team works out of the former SAS base at Hereford, launching missions into a fallen Europe in search of clues to a vaccine. They fight their way through labs and cities overrun with ever more dangerous variants of the infected, then link up with the USS John F. Kennedy, the last surviving nuclear supercarrier. Its Marine Raider detachment, led by Master Gunnery Sergeant Fick, becomes both backup and comic relief as the series hurtles from one disaster zone to the next.

Across fourteen main sequence novels the story ranges from Britain and continental Europe to Africa, the United States, the Middle East, and the open ocean. Readers see the war against the dead from multiple angles: special operations raids, Royal Marine last stands, carrier flight decks facing tides of walkers, and command bunkers trying to coordinate a global response as communications fail.

What keeps the books grounded is the cast. Handon, the haunted American commander of Alpha; Ainsley, the British officer trying to balance orders and conscience; Homer, whose family in the States becomes a powerful off screen motive; Ali, a sniper who refuses to give up; and Fick, with his legendary stream of insults, all evolve under the stress of years of combat. Their relationships, rivalries, and gallows humor cut through the gunfire.

Alongside the main line, companion volumes like Fickisms, standalones such as Odyssey and Last Stand, and additional prequel and side series fill in the gaps around the central campaign. Taken together, Arisen reads like an enormous, continuous operation, charting the opening outbreak, the long grind of survival, and the desperate final attempt to claw back a future for the living.
