Series background & context
The Åre Murders series takes readers from the sea to the mountains, following Stockholm police officer Hanna Ahlander as she starts over in the ski resort town of Åre. Reeling from a broken relationship and a stalled career, Hanna lands a job with the small local police force and is paired with Detective Inspector Daniel Lindskog, a new father struggling to balance work and family.
Right from Hidden in Snow, their cases are shaped by the setting. A teenage girl vanishes during a party weekend as a blizzard closes in, and the search plays out on icy slopes, in dark forests, and among cabins that suddenly feel far from help. The follow up, Hidden in Shadows, opens with the brutal murder of a former Olympic skier and leads Hanna and Daniel toward a secretive religious community and a pastor's wife trapped in an abusive marriage.
In Hidden in Memories a glamorous property developer is stabbed to death in a luxury lodge tied to an old high mountain hotel, a crime that soon links to a missing teenager and a maid who pays a terrible price for what she has seen. Later books continue the pattern, cutting between high end tourism and the everyday lives of those who clean rooms, run lifts, and inherit long running feuds.
The series leans into Nordic noir but keeps a strong emotional core. Hanna is determined and impulsive, still working through an unhappy childhood and her own missteps, while Daniel fights his temper and the feeling that he is failing the people closest to him. Their partnership is based on trust and friction in equal parts, and personal choices often bleed into their professional decisions.
Åre itself is portrayed as both beautiful and dangerous. Sten makes use of chairlifts, mountain roads, sudden snowstorms, and isolated cabins to raise the stakes, and the harsh climate often becomes a race against time for both investigators and victims. Beneath the resort's glossy surface the books explore issues like domestic violence, corruption, addiction, exploitation of seasonal workers, and the pressure to keep the tourist economy running at any cost.
Although each novel can be read on its own, following the Åre books in order lets you see how Hanna and Daniel change with every case, and how the town itself reacts to being known for more than just skiing. The series offers a different slice of Swedish life from Sandhamn, while keeping Sten's signature mix of setting rich detail, social insight, and tightly plotted suspense.
