Bluecrowne shifts to the Sovereign City of Nagspeake in 1810. Lucy Bluecrowne is unhappy about being made to live ashore after years aboard her father's ship. Then criminals identify her younger brother Liao as the fireworks prodigy they need for a dangerous plan. Lucy's fight to keep her family safe drives a tense historical adventure of smugglers, secret missions, and strange devices.

Together, the books show how broad Milford's world can be. One is an uncanny crossroads mystery with clockwork and old dangers. The other is a fast-moving seafaring story shaped by war, family loyalty, and pyrotechnics. Both have darker edges than the cozier Greenglass House novels, while still leaving room for humor and resourceful young characters.

For the smoothest path, read The Boneshaker before The Kairos Mechanism. Read Bluecrowne before The Left-Handed Fate if you want added context for Lucy and Liao, though neither pairing is strictly necessary. The pleasure of Arcana is in seeing how the pieces fit, one unexpected connection at a time.
