Author bio

Annie Rains grew up in a military town in North Carolina, where uniforms, homecomings, and good-byes were part of everyday life. Those early years, surrounded by families who were always waiting for someone to come home, shaped the kind of stories she wanted to tell. She has carried that mix of longing, loyalty, and hope into her fiction ever since.

As an adult she stayed close to home, building a life in a small North Carolina community that looks a lot like the towns in her books. She married, had three children, and squeezed in writing time around work and family, filling notebooks and computer folders with scenes about bookshops, bed-and-breakfasts, and neighbors who look out for each other.

After years of drafting stories in the margins of a busy life, she sold her first novel in 2015. That book grew into the Hero's Welcome series, set in the coastal town of Seaside and focused on Marines, teachers, and other locals trying to balance duty with a chance at love. Becoming a published author meant new deadlines and long nights, but it also gave her a way to honor the military community she knew so well.

Rains is best known for her small-town romance series Sweetwater Springs and Somerset Lake. In Sweetwater Springs, readers meet innkeepers, florists, firefighters, and cafe owners who gather for winter festivals and summer runs, often with a matchmaking dog or two underfoot. Somerset Lake follows a tight-knit group of friends through book clubs, lake cottages, and Christmas contests, showing how second chances can bloom long after life has gone off script.

Earlier series like Blushing Bay and Hero's Welcome lean into coastal life and military service, blending fishing boats, beaches, and base life with everyday problems like co-parenting, grief, and complicated family histories. Rains likes to pair her heroes and heroines with real-world responsibilities, whether that means raising kids alone, caring for aging parents, or running small businesses that the whole town depends on.

More recently she has stepped into women's fiction and lightly magical stories. Books like Through the Snow Globe, The Charmed Friends of Trove Isle, and Summer in a Bottle use time loops, enchanted objects, and long-lost keepsakes to explore grief, friendship, and the question of what you would change if you had another chance. She has also written young adult fiction, including The Matchbreaker Summer, which trades small-town inns for summer camp cabins while keeping the same focus on family and first love.

Across all of her work, certain themes repeat. Her characters wrestle with loss and regret but keep showing up for one another. They fall in love slowly, over cups of coffee, shared shifts, and community projects. There are usually pets causing trouble, holiday lights going up around town, and a tight circle of friends ready with advice or a spare bedroom.

Today Rains writes from her home in North Carolina, sharing it with her husband, three children, and a pair of much-loved rescue animals, and she still aims for the same thing with every book: to leave readers feeling like they have just spent time in a town they would happily call home.
