Annie Knox Books in Order

Annie Knox is the pen name Wendy Lyn Watson uses for her Pet Boutique mysteries, and that split name fits a split life. By day she has taught law and politics at the University of North Texas. On the page, she writes cozy mysteries full of pets, small businesses, gossip, and murder that arrives at the worst possible time.

She was born in Ohio, has long described herself as a Buckeye, and has lived in several states, including Virginia, Michigan, Minnesota, Louisiana, and Texas. That moving-around life seems to have given her a good eye for place. Her books like towns with texture, strong local habits, and characters who have been in one another's business for years.

The turn toward writing came in stages. She took creative writing classes in high school and college, then went on to law school and a PhD in political science. Later, while in Minneapolis on a bitterly cold day, she ducked into the Loft Literary Center for coffee, noticed the writing classes, signed up for a genre fiction course, and started a story that pulled her in for good.

That was the moment it clicked.

Her road to publication was not especially tidy. She started with romance and what was then called chick lit, joined Romance Writers of America, and kept hearing that editors liked her voice even when the market was shifting under her feet. An agent nudged her toward cozy mystery, and the fit turned out to be natural. Watson has said that even in her early romance drafts, somebody always seemed to wind up dead.

As Wendy Lyn Watson, she launched the Mysteries à la Mode books with I Scream, You Scream, then followed with Scoop to Kill and A Parfait Murder. Those novels mix food, family trouble, and humor in a small Texas setting. Under the Annie Knox name, she moved into pet-centered cozies with Paws for Murder, Groomed For Murder, and Collared For Murder, all built around Izzy McHale and her Minnesota pet boutique. She also wrote the historical romantic mystery Once Upon a Wallflower, which shows how comfortable she is blending mystery with another genre.

Animals matter in her books.

So do family ties, both the ones people are born into and the ones they build for themselves. She has said she hopes readers laugh first, but that they also notice the loyalty running through her stories. That helps explain why her mysteries feel cozy without feeling weightless. The crimes are puzzles, but the emotional pull usually comes from a heroine trying to protect her people.

Readers who like Knox tend to like that balance. The books are light on gore, but not light on stakes. Her main characters are often rebuilding something, a business, a life, a sense of self, while managing local chaos and very inconvenient corpses. There is humor, there is community, and there is usually a problem that gets personal very fast.

She now lives in North Texas with her husband, near a courthouse square, in an old historic house she has described with affectionate wear and tear. Depending on the bio, there are also spoiled cats nearby. Add in a fondness for 1980s music, Asian horror films, reality TV, and vegetarian cooking, and you get a writer who feels easy to picture. The Annie Knox books make room for all of that, the legal brain, the animal love, the small-town observation, and the sly sense of fun.
