Author bio

Annie Groves is the pen name that novelist Penelope Halsall used when she turned from contemporary romance to warm, nostalgic stories about ordinary families living through the shock of two world wars. Writing as Annie, she created Liverpool and London sagas that sit alongside the more than two hundred novels she published under other names.

She was born Penelope Jones on 24 November 1946 in Preston, Lancashire, the eldest of three children in a close working class family. Growing up in the north west of England, she spent hours in the local library while her mother changed her father's books, roaming the shelves and taking home as many stories as she could carry.

As a child she told nightly cliffhanger tales to her younger sister, a habit that quietly trained her to think in chapters and endings long before she put a book in the post to an editor.

At grammar school in Rochdale she focused on English and geography, then left with O levels and took a job as a shorthand typist in Manchester. For around fourteen years she worked in offices by day and read voraciously by night, discovering the escapism of romantic fiction and the tight structure of the Mills and Boon novels she came to love.

Her turning point came after she married accountant Steve Halsall. Money was tight, but he bought her a small electric typewriter and urged her to try writing seriously. She entered a competition run by the Romantic Novelists' Association; she did not win, but an agent noticed her manuscript and encouraged her to keep going. In 1979 her first Regency romance, Duchess in Disguise, appeared under the name Caroline Courtney.

Through the 1980s and 1990s she became best known as Penny Jordan, writing intense, contemporary romances for Mills and Boon while also producing books as Melinda Wright and Lydia Hitchcock.

In the early 2000s she adopted her mother's maiden name, Groves, for a new strand of historical novels. As Annie Groves she drew heavily on stories told by her grandmother Elsie and by relatives from Liverpool, turning family memories of the First World War, the Blitz and the changing role of women into fiction. The Pride family novels, beginning with Ellie Pride, move from Edwardian Preston to the upheavals of the Great War, while the World War II, Campion family, Empire Street and Article Row books follow working people in Liverpool and London as they cope with blackouts, rationing and sudden loss.

At the heart of these books are friendships, makeshift families and the small daily acts of courage that keep people going when the world around them is collapsing.

Halsall lived for many years in Cheshire, in a house where she wrote at the kitchen table with dogs and cats nearby and neighbours dropping in. Friends and fellow writers remember someone generous with her time, happy to mentor newcomers and to talk honestly about the discipline it took to meet deadlines month after month.

Her husband died of cancer in 2002, but she kept writing, and in 2011 the Romantic Novelists' Association recognised her contribution with a lifetime achievement award. She died later that year, aged sixty five, but the Annie Groves books have continued with carefully chosen collaborators who knew her and her world. For readers who love heartfelt, grounded stories about ordinary women in extraordinary times, her work remains a comforting place to return to.
