Anne Emery Books in Order

Anne Emery was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and grew up in Moncton, New Brunswick. She studied at St. F.X. University and later at Dalhousie, where she earned graduate and law degrees. Before she was known for crime fiction, she built a working life around law, reporting, and research.

Law came first.

Emery has worked as a lawyer, a legal affairs reporter, and a researcher, and that background shows in her fiction. Her books understand how cases move, how testimony can bend, and how institutions protect themselves. Just as important, they understand the people inside those systems, the weary defence lawyer, the difficult witness, the priest who knows more than he can say.

She began publishing novels in 2006 with Sign of the Cross, the first Collins-Burke mystery. That book introduced Monty Collins, a Halifax criminal defence lawyer, and Father Brennan Burke, an Irish-born priest with a sharp tongue and a complicated past. It also won the Crime Writers of Canada award for best first crime novel, a strong start for a series that kept growing. Obit and Barrington Street Blues quickly showed that Emery was interested in more than neat puzzles. She liked family trouble, old loyalties, and the way history stays in the room.

Music matters in these books.

So does faith. In Cecilian Vespers, church politics and sacred music become part of a murder case. In Children in the Morning, a family murder trial is shaped by secrecy, strain, and the perspective of a child on the edge of adult trouble. In Blood on a Saint, a supposed apparition brings crowds, noise, and suspicion to Halifax. Readers who return to Emery tend to like the same things: smart dialogue, a lived-in sense of place, and characters who are decent enough to care about even when they are stubborn, secretive, or plainly wrong.

Ireland is another constant. Emery travels there often, and her fiction keeps returning to Irish history, family memory, and the long shadow of the Troubles. Books such as Ruined Abbey, Though the Heavens Fall, Fenian Street, and Declan move between Halifax, Dublin, Belfast, New York, and beyond, without losing sight of the human scale. Even when politics and history get large, the engine is still personal, who loved whom, who kept quiet, who owes what, and who is willing to lie.

She also stepped outside the main series with The Keening, a standalone historical mystery set partly in sixteenth-century Ireland and partly in the present day. That novel shows another side of her work, patient historical research, layered timelines, and a deep interest in how the past survives in land, story, and ritual. The awards kept coming, too. Children in the Morning won the Dartmouth Book Award for Fiction and an Independent Publisher silver medal. Years later, Though the Heavens Fall won the Crime Writers of Canada award for best crime novel, and Fenian Street was a finalist for best traditional mystery.

What makes Emery easy to recommend is how grounded she is on the page. Her books know courts, pubs, choir lofts, family kitchens, and city streets. They are interested in crime, but also in music, religion, friendship, class, and the many ways a person can be divided against themselves.

Emery lives in Halifax and travels often to Ireland. That seems right for a writer whose novels are always crossing water, looking both ways, and carrying a little history with them.
