Anna Marie McLemore Books in Order

Anna-Marie McLemore grew up in a Mexican-American family in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. In one of their recurring biographical details, they say their family taught them to hear La Llorona in the Santa Ana winds. That mix of folklore, family memory, and ordinary life runs straight through their books.

Stories arrived early.

McLemore attended the University of Southern California on a Trustee Scholarship, later became a Lambda Literary Fellow, and published short work before turning to novels. In interviews, they have said there was not one single lightning-bolt moment that made them a writer. It was more like realizing there was room for the kinds of stories they wanted to tell, queer stories, Latine stories, and magical realism that treated wonder and hurt as neighbors.

Their debut, The Weight of Feathers, arrived in 2015 and put many of the McLemore hallmarks on the page at once. Rival traveling families. Performance as inheritance. Bodies under scrutiny. A love story pushing against old fear. The book was a finalist for the William C. Morris Award, and it still works well as a first stop for readers who want atmosphere, romance, and family conflict all tangled together.

When the Moon Was Ours widened their audience even more. The novel was longlisted for the National Book Award and received a Stonewall Honor, and readers often remember it for the tenderness of Samir and Miel's story as much as for its strangeness and beauty. Then came Wild Beauty, another deeply rooted world, this time a garden full of longing, family history, and a curse that feels old enough to have weather in it.

They keep finding new ways into old stories.

In Blanca & Roja, Dark and Deepest Red, and Self-Made Boys, McLemore turns fairy tale and classic literature inside out, using them to talk about colorism, gender, desire, and the stories people inherit before they are old enough to question them. Lakelore brings that same care to two nonbinary teens, a hidden world under a lake, and the messy overlap between magic, anxiety, and neurodivergence. The Mirror Season is one of their rawest books, following two survivors as they try to live through violence without letting it become the whole shape of who they are.

Across all these novels, certain concerns return again and again: queer and trans characters claiming room for themselves, family love that protects and wounds, and communities that can feel both enchanted and cruel. McLemore's settings are often full of gardens, water, red shoes, moons, birds, and rumors, but the emotional pull is very human. Readers who love their work usually come back for that mix of tenderness, danger, and the feeling that the world is stranger than it first looks.

More recently, McLemore has stretched into new lanes without losing that core. They co-wrote the fantasy novel Venom & Vow with Elliott McLemore, moved into darker suspense with Flawless Girls and We Could Be Anyone, and made their adult-fiction debut with The Influencers. The range is wider now, but the questions are familiar: Who gets to define you, who profits from that story, and what happens when you refuse it?
