Author bio

Anna Lee Huber grew up in a small town in Ohio in a lively household with four brothers and a sister, where games of make believe were part of everyday life. Summers were spent turning snow boots and old nightgowns into costumes, or transforming a riding lawn mower into a starship or getaway van.

In fourth grade she wrote a story called Prom Duty and convinced her teacher to read it aloud to the class, a moment she still counts as her first writing success. Through her teens she kept filling notebooks with tales, including a mystery series about a gang of sleuthing friends inspired by the Nancy Drew novels she loved.

After a family move to South Carolina and graduation from high school, she headed to Nashville to study music at Lipscomb University. She arrived dreaming of a life on stage, more contemporary Christian star than rock rebel, and threw herself into voice lessons, rehearsals, and recitals. At Lipscomb she also met the fellow student who would become her husband when they shared the stage in a production of Our Town.

They married just before she graduated summa cum laude with a degree in music and a minor in psychology. Like many new graduates, she left campus unsure what came next, and spent several years working as an administrative assistant while she tried to chart a path between the rehearsal room and the rest of her life.

Slowly, the pull of storytelling returned. Huber began arranging music, then drifted back toward fiction, rediscovering the pleasure she had felt as a kid inventing puzzles and adventures. She wrote several practice novels, learning what did and did not fit her voice, before turning to historical mystery.

That experimentation led to The Anatomist's Wife, the first Lady Darby mystery, set in 1830s Scotland. The series follows portrait artist Lady Kiera Darby, whose knowledge of anatomy and difficult past make her a sharp but unlikely investigator, and her partnership with inquiry agent Sebastian Gage. Readers have responded to the blend of gothic atmosphere, emotional healing, and classic puzzle plotting that runs through Kiera's cases.

Huber has since expanded her historical world in new directions. Her Verity Kent novels follow a former British Intelligence agent untangling espionage and murder in the uneasy years just after the First World War. The Gothic Myths books lean into romantic suspense and local legends, beginning with Secrets in the Mist on the misty Norfolk broads, while Sisters of Fortune traces three Canadian sisters aboard the Titanic as they confront questions of love, duty, and independence.

Across these stories she returns to a few constants: women pushing against the limits of their time, the long shadows cast by violence and war, and the small acts of courage people find in terrifying moments. She enjoys digging into social history, from medical schools and grave robbing to wartime intelligence networks and postwar politics, then weaving those details into mysteries that still feel intimate and character driven.

Along the way, Huber's work has reached bestseller lists and earned honors such as the Daphne award, as well as nominations for other genre prizes. She is an active member of the mystery community through organizations like Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, and International Thriller Writers.

Huber now lives with her family in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where her days revolve around drafting new chapters, reading widely, and squeezing in music, crafts, and travel when deadlines allow. The imaginative child who once turned backyards into whole invented worlds now does much the same thing at her desk, inviting readers into settings that feel richly lived in, one mystery at a time.
