Author bio

Anna Carey is one of those author names that can send you in a few very different directions. On this page, the name covers several books that do not come from one single career, so the most useful place to start is with that simple fact.

One Anna Carey is the American young adult novelist behind Sloane Sisters, Eve, Blackbird, and This Is Not the Jess Show. She grew up on Long Island, the daughter of a special education teacher and an astronomer. She studied literature and creative writing at New York University, later earned an MFA in fiction from Brooklyn College, and worked in children's publishing before moving into fiction full time.

Her books tend to put girls in high-pressure worlds and then ask what happens when the story they have been told turns out to be false. Eve starts with an all-girls school in a ruined future and opens into a dystopian escape story. Blackbird and Deadfall turn into lean, paranoid thrillers built around amnesia, pursuit, and identity. This Is Not the Jess Show and This Is Not the Real World mix 1990s nostalgia, media satire, and conspiracy energy. Her work has been translated into more than a dozen languages, and some of it has been optioned for film and television.

She likes fast plots, sharp turns, and heroines who have to think for themselves.

Another Anna Carey is the Irish novelist and journalist from Dublin, more specifically Drumcondra, whose books include The Making of Mollie, The Boldness of Betty, and Our Song. Before novels took over, she spent her teens and twenties playing in bands, then built a career in journalism and editing. Her first novel, The Real Rebecca, won a major Irish children's book prize, and the books that followed kept that same lively mix of humor, feeling, and close observation.

Her historical fiction for younger readers looks carefully at ordinary girls caught inside much bigger political moments. The Making of Mollie follows a teenager pulled toward the suffrage movement in 1912 Dublin. The Boldness of Betty moves into the 1913 Lockout and the world of work, class, and protest. Then Our Song, her first adult novel, shifts into contemporary romance, with music, missed chances, and old feelings coming back at awkward times. She is married to journalist and author Patrick Freyne and lives in Dublin.

Same name, very different shelves.

There is also a separate Anna Carey associated with the Little Green Pea books and I Guessed, titles that focus on family, feelings, attachment, and adoptive parenting. Those books use simple language and child-friendly setups to open difficult conversations, which gives them a very different purpose from the YA thrillers or the Irish historical novels.

So if the Anna Carey bibliography feels a little unusual, that is because it is. What links these books on this page is not one neat author arc, but a shared byline across very different kinds of writing: glossy teen drama, dystopian romance, puzzle-box thrillers, historical coming-of-age stories, therapeutic picture books, and contemporary romance. The good news is that once you know which Anna Carey, and which mood, you are after, the reading path gets a lot clearer.
