Writing became serious for her in law school.

While working on a note for Health Matrix, she saw her words in print for the first time and had the kind of ah-ha moment writers tend to remember for years. The path from there was not straight. After earning her JD, she worked at a small law firm in Columbus, and later taught English to eighth graders in Virginia before returning to Northeast Ohio. A legal career, she has said, did not feel like the right long-term fit. She also kept reading the stories she loved most, especially romantic comedies and the classic 1990s rom-coms that shaped her sense of fun and timing.

Then she stopped dabbling.

After her son was born, she decided to treat writing like a real commitment and wrote every day when she could, often around family life and a full schedule. Her first finished manuscript, a romantic suspense novel, never made it to publication, but it helped her sharpen her craft and land an agent. In 2019, she won the RWA Golden Heart, a sign that the work was connecting.

Her published debut, Shipped, arrived in 2021. It throws an overworked cruise line marketing manager together with the colleague she loves to hate, then traps them in close quarters on a work trip to the Galapagos. Readers who click with Hockman tend to like the same things here: brisk banter, lots of chemistry, a capable heroine, and a setting that feels like more than scenery. Her own experience in eco-tourism, including travel to the Galapagos, gives the book an easy confidence about the world it describes.

A year later she followed with Dream On, a Cleveland-set romance that starts with a law grad waking from a car accident with memories of a boyfriend she has never met. It is a lighter, stranger premise than Shipped, but it still feels like a Hockman story, funny, heartfelt, and interested in the gap between the life you plan and the life that surprises you. Her books may be polished, but they are not fussy. They are grounded, playful, and written by someone who seems to enjoy both big travel dreams and the messy charm of ordinary life.
