An Unexpected Hero, also known as So You Want To Be A Hero, is a comic fantasy LitRPG adventure by Rhett C. Bruno and Jaime Castle. It starts with a man who is not looking for a quest, a kingdom, or an opportunity to prove himself.

Danny Kendrick just wants to make a living as a performer.

That plan falls apart when Danny angers the wrong person and is pulled into a fantasy realm that feels a little like a Renaissance fair with much sharper weapons. He is suddenly surrounded by barbarians, assassins, magic, strange monsters, and a System that assigns classes and abilities while offering more complications than comfort.

Danny has to learn the rules fast. The world operates with recognizable LitRPG elements, including progression, classes, skills, and an artificial intelligence tied to the System. But the series uses those ideas for humor as well as danger. Danny is not a chosen warrior arriving with a perfect plan. He is a performer trying to survive by staying charming, adaptable, and occasionally lucky.

An ancient lute becomes the first major complication. After making a questionable arrangement with a hag, Danny receives the instrument and quickly learns that several mysterious factions want its power. He is joined by Screenie, the System AI assigned to him, and Curr, a barbarian companion. Together they have to work out why the lute matters and how to stay alive long enough to use what they learn.

The tone is playful, self-aware, and character-driven. There are jokes about fantasy conventions and game systems, but the stakes remain real for Danny and his new friends. His journey is also about belonging. In his old life, he struggled to find a place where his talents mattered. The new world is dangerous, but it may also offer the first real chance to become part of something.

Readers should expect an isekai setup, steady power growth, travel, party dynamics, magical trouble, and a main character who often talks his way into as much danger as he talks his way out of. The story has plenty of action, but it leaves room for smaller character moments and friendships.
