The An Eye For An Eye books are rooted in Newcastle crime territory, but they do not romanticize it. These are gangland stories about drivers, runners, enforcers, and family men who keep getting pulled deeper into somebody else’s mess. The first spark is personal, an accident that leaves Jasmine Doyle permanently disfigured, and the retaliation that follows spreads out through the city like a stain.

At the heart of the series are men who are dangerous without ever feeling glamorous. Graeme Taylor is the kind of seasoned hard man who knows exactly what violence costs and uses it anyway. Tracksuit Tony Gordon, younger and more impulsive, gives the series some of its energy and a lot of its heart. Their relationship matters. It helps keep the books from becoming just a parade of beatings and betrayals.

The setting does a lot of work here. Newcastle is not just a backdrop with a few local place names dropped in for flavor. In these books it feels lived in, with back streets, drug houses, dodgy jobs, borrowed cars, and the constant sense that everyone knows somebody who knows somebody. When people make a mistake, there is no wide open road to disappear onto. Trouble is already around the corner.

As the series goes on, the canvas gets broader. The Runner moves through stolen money, shaky loyalties, and the kind of low-level scheming that can blow up into something much worse. Violent By Design widens things again with raids, reprisals, new faces trying to rise fast, and old hands who may need to come back into play. What links the books is not one neat case to solve. It is fallout. One bad act leads to another, and then another.

No one here gets to stay clean.

That is a big part of the appeal. These are crime novels where even the people you end up rooting for are compromised in one way or another. They are trying to survive, protect somebody, prove themselves, or get back what they think they are owed. Sometimes those motives overlap. Sometimes they collide head-on.

If you like British gangland noir with a strong sense of place, fast pacing, and characters who always seem one step away from disaster, this series does the job. It is violent, yes, but the violence is tied to pride, family, revenge, and the hard fact that in this world almost every debt gets collected. Reading in order works best, because each book builds on the wreckage left by the last one.
