Series background & context

Amy Lillard's Amish Mystery series is set in Blue Sky, Pennsylvania, and follows one of her most memorable leads, Kathryn Kappy King. Kappy is plainspoken, observant, and perfectly content with the life she has built making prayer kapps for the women of her Amish community. She is not trying to be a detective. She just keeps noticing things other people miss.

That is the charm of the series.

Kappy is surrounded by an unusual little investigative circle. Her closest ally is Edie Peachey, an outsider to the Amish community whose return to Blue Sky gives the books an extra layer of tension and humor. Jimmy, Edie's brother, is part of the heart of the series too, and the contrast between Kappy's practical, old-school habits and Edie's more modern instincts gives the books a lively rhythm.

Across Kappy King and the Puppy Kaper, Kappy King and the Pickle Kaper, Kappy King and the Pie Kaper, and This Little Piggy, the crimes stay rooted in community life. That matters. These are not dark procedurals dropped into Amish country. They are cozy mysteries built out of local rivalries, family secrets, food contests, gossip, festivals, and the everyday business of a town that looks peaceful until someone starts asking the right questions.

Blue Sky itself does a lot of work here. Lillard uses the setting well, not just the Amish customs and clothes, but the social rules, the closeness of the community, and the way old hurts linger when everyone knows one another's history. Because of that, the mysteries feel personal even when the tone stays light.

If you want cozies with a strong sense of place, an appealing sleuth, and a mix of humor, friendship, and small-town secrets, this series delivers. The books are gentle in tone, but the puzzles still have enough bite to keep the pages moving.
