Dream of Freedom

by Michael Phillips

2005

In the slaveholding South, Richmond and Carolyn Davidson face a moral crossroads that will change everything. When they choose to free their enslaved workers, they step into conflict with neighbors, family, and a system built to crush anyone who resists.

Series background & context

American Dreams is a three-book historical saga that follows one family as the United States moves toward civil war. The story begins in the South, in a world where wealth and comfort are built on slavery, and it doesn’t let the characters stay neutral for long.

Richmond and Carolyn Davidson live with privilege, but they can’t ignore what they see happening around them. Their decision to free their enslaved workers sets off a chain reaction that touches everyone in their orbit, from family members who disagree to neighbors who feel threatened.

Freedom isn’t an abstract idea here, it has faces.

As the trilogy continues through Dream of Life and Dream of Love, the Davidsons find themselves drawn into the dangerous, practical work of helping others escape, while their own relationships fray under the strain. The books show how moral choices ripple outward: friendships break, loyalties shift, and love has to survive fear, suspicion, and the chaos of a country splitting in two.

Phillips writes these novels with a strong sense of place and a steady focus on character. There’s romance and suspense, but the heart of the series is the question of what courage looks like when it costs you something real.

Read the trilogy in order, starting with Dream of Freedom. The emotional arc depends on watching the same people grow, fail, repent, and try again as history closes in around them.
