Author bio

Amanda Cabot grew up in a house where books were simply part of everyday life. Her parents read to her, her father made up stories, and she has said that she taught herself to read because being surrounded by all those books made it hard to wait. Long before writing became her job, it was already the thing she kept circling back to.

She decided young that she wanted to write.

By the time she was seven, she was already trying out different forms, even writing elementary-school plays called All About Thermometers and Hawaii. For a while she imagined herself as a newspaper reporter, but novels kept winning. Even then, though, she was practical enough to think writing would probably need to be a second career rather than a first one.

That practical streak shaped the next part of her life. She studied French in college and planned to teach at the university level. After marrying her high school sweetheart, she took what was supposed to be a temporary job as a computer programmer. Instead, that work turned into a long career in information technology, and she eventually served as a director of information technology for a major international corporation.

It was not exactly a straight line to historical romance.

Still, writing never disappeared. During those years she wrote four technical books and a long list of technical articles. She jokes that there were enough of those articles to cure insomnia in a medium-sized city, which tells you something useful about her voice. Even when she is talking about work, there is usually a dry smile somewhere in the sentence.

Her move into Christian fiction came later and for deeply personal reasons. She has said that readers had encouraged her for years to write for the Christian market, but the death of a dear friend, and the strength of that friend's faith, changed the way she looked at her work. After that, she wanted her fiction to speak not only about romantic love, but also about God's love and the hope that comes with it.

That shift helped shape the books many readers know best. In novels like Paper Roses, Out of the Embers, After the Shadows, and At Bluebonnet Lake, Cabot returns again and again to people standing at a crossroads. Some are heading west with more fear than certainty. Some are rebuilding after grief, betrayal, or disappointment. Readers often come for the romance, but they stay for the sense of place, the gentle faith thread, and the way suspense or mystery keeps the story moving.

Setting matters in her books.

Texas Hill Country appears often, as do Wyoming towns, boardinghouses, ranches, newspapers, hotels, and communities where everyone knows a little too much about everyone else. She writes both historical and contemporary romance, but the emotional pull is similar in each: people trying to find safety, belonging, and a future that feels solid. Her books have appeared on bestseller lists and have been finalists for awards including the Carol, the HOLT Medallion, and the Booksellers Best.

Today Cabot writes fiction full time and lives in Cheyenne. That feels fitting. After years of writing about frontier towns, western landscapes, and lives remade far from where they began, she ended up building her own life in a place that suits the stories she tells. Her path to fiction was not quick, but it was steady, and that steadiness still shows on the page.
