Author bio
Ally Condie grew up in Cedar City, Utah, a small southern Utah town that still matters to her imagination. Long before she could write, she made up stories and dictated them to her babysitter. Her early interest in storytelling stuck.
She studied English teaching at Brigham Young University, then taught high school English in Utah and upstate New York. Working with teenagers gave her a close view of the big questions that shape those years, including friendship, identity, family, belief, love, and the fear of making the wrong choice.
Teaching also left little time for her own creative work. After becoming a parent, she returned to writing and began building a career book by book.
Her first novel, Yearbook, arrived in 2006. It launched a trilogy set around Lakeview High, where students and teachers deal with everyday problems, shifting friendships, and choices about the future. The follow-ups, First Day and Reunion, keep the focus on an interconnected group of young people as high school gives way to college, work, and adulthood.
In 2010, Matched introduced the book that brought Condie to a much wider audience. In its tightly controlled future, Cassia expects the Society to select every important part of her life, including the person she will marry. A second face on her Match screen changes everything. Crossed and Reached follow Cassia, Ky, and Xander as private doubts become a fight over freedom, choice, and the kind of future people want to build.
Condie has moved easily between age groups and genres. Atlantia heads below the ocean with Rio, a young woman stranded in an underwater city and forced to uncover family secrets. Summerlost is quieter and more grounded, following Cedar as grief, a new friendship, and a theater festival reshape one difficult summer. In The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe, a teenage captain pursues revenge on a dangerous river while questioning what that pursuit is doing to her.
She also teamed up with Brendan Reichs for the middle-grade The Darkdeep books. Those stories send a group of kids into the eerie waters of Still Cove, where imagination can become a real and frightening problem.
More recently, Condie has written a picture book, Here: I Can Be Mindful, about helping children pause and notice the world around them. Her adult mystery The Unwedding puts a newly single woman at an isolated Big Sur resort when a wedding turns deadly. The books may look very different on the surface, but they often return to people facing uncertainty and deciding how to move forward.
Condie earned an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts and teaches at Brigham Young University. She lives in Utah Valley and enjoys hiking with her four children. Her path from teacher to working novelist still shows up in the care she gives to young people trying to figure themselves out.
