Series background & context

Alien Legacy is a tighter, more self-contained military science fiction setup than some of Joshua James's longer sagas, but it still hits several of his favorite notes. The story centers on two brothers returning to the world that was shattered by powerful aliens years earlier. One wants justice. The other mainly wants to survive. That split is important, because it keeps the story from becoming a simple revenge march.

Planet Hell lives up to the name.

The setting is not just a ruined battlefield. It is a place warped by memory, fear, and the lingering presence of beings humanity still does not properly understand. As the brothers dig for answers about what happened to their parents and what the aliens were really doing, they run into shifting alliances, hidden agendas, and people who see the crisis as an opportunity rather than a tragedy.

That gives the story its main tension. The aliens are terrifying on their own, but the human reaction to them may be just as dangerous. Everybody wants the truth for a different reason. Some want power. Some want revenge. Some just want to get off the planet alive. The brothers are stuck in the middle, trying to decide what justice even means once the scale of the secret becomes clear.

The tone is leaner than a huge fleet series, but still fast and action-heavy. There are soldiers, conspiracies, and a devastated world full of bad choices. If you like military sci-fi with a strong mystery core and a more personal emotional hook than a standard invasion plot, Alien Legacy offers a good, sharp entry point.
