Author bio

Alexi Venice writes legal, medical, crime, and spy thrillers where smart women are usually in motion, in court, in danger, or all three at once. Her books mix murder investigations, courtroom pressure, and romance, which gives them a pace that feels sharp but still personal.

Before fiction, Venice spent more than three decades practicing law. That long career shows up everywhere in her work, in witness prep, in the way lawyers circle a problem, in the hospital politics behind a case, and in the strange theater that comes with trial work. She has also worked as legal counsel in a healthcare system, which helps explain why her medical and legal details feel lived-in instead of borrowed.

She knows the machinery from the inside.

Venice has said that after years in law, the novels in her head wanted out. Her early books were the Pepper McCallan thrillers, including Ebola Vaccine Wars, Svea's Sins, Victus, and Margaret River Winery. Those novels move through bioterror plots, global travel, and political games, but they already show the mix she keeps returning to: high stakes, capable women, science or legal detail, and romance that matters to the story instead of sitting off to the side.

That blend is especially clear in the San Francisco books. Bourbon Chase, Amanda's Dragonfly, and Stabscotch pull together ER doctor Jen Dawson, District Attorney Amanda Hawthorne, and detective Tommy Vietti in a long-running knot of loyalty, attraction, and danger. Readers who click with this series usually like that it gives them both a crime plot and an ongoing emotional mess to invest in. The city matters too. San Francisco is not just a backdrop in these books, it is part of the pressure.

Her Monica Spade novels lean even harder into courtroom tension. In Conscious Bias, Standby Counsel, and Graffiti Red Murder, Venice follows a hospital attorney who keeps getting dragged from legal work into murder cases and personal upheaval. Standby Counsel won a Lesfic Bard Award in Mystery and was later named Best Legal Thriller of 2021. Those books are a good example of what Venice does well: one legal problem, one personal problem, and then a third problem that makes both of the first two worse.

She does not write people who get tidy weekends.

More recently, Venice opened a new lane with Hank Hart. Baking Ice Cubes begins as a small-town medical malpractice thriller and then grows into sabotage, attraction, and courtroom combat. Grilling Martinis pushes the same heroine into covert operations and a bigger spy canvas. That jump says a lot about Venice as a storyteller. She likes women who can learn fast, take a hit, and keep moving.

Her research habits fit that energy. Earlier profiles note that she has traveled to places she writes about and even tried some of the activities that show up in her fiction, including wake boarding and boxing. She has also said that her courtroom scenes draw directly on years of practice and on the kinds of behind-the-scenes moments most readers never get to see. Just as important, she is open about wanting romance in these stories. In her view, solving a case does not cancel out a rich personal life.

Venice lives in Wisconsin, is married, and recent bios place her on or near the lake whenever she can get there. They also mention family life, including grandsons, which feels like a nice counterweight to the pace of her books. On the page, she writes danger, desire, and hard choices. Off the page, she sounds like someone who still enjoys getting outside when the work is done.
