Series background & context

Alexandra Barnaby, usually called Barnaby, is Janet Evanovich’s ticket to a different kind of chaos: sun, speed, and Florida trouble. The series starts with Metro Girl, when Barnaby’s brother, nicknamed Wild Bill, disappears. His last known trail points to Miami and a NASCAR connection, so Barnaby goes looking, even though she knows that following her brother usually means walking into a mess.

Barnaby isn’t a trained detective. She’s the kind of heroine who shows up because she has to, then refuses to leave when people tell her to stay out of it. She’s loyal to a fault, quick to argue, and fully aware that her brother has a gift for turning small mistakes into disasters. That family dynamic gives the books an emotional core underneath the jokes and chases.

NASCAR energy runs through the series.

Barnaby’s path keeps crossing with Sam Hooker, a driver who knows how to handle speed and risk. As the books go on, Barnaby gets closer to his world, including the behind-the-scenes logistics that keep races running and the shady characters who see the sport as a place to hide. Hooker isn’t just eye candy or a getaway driver, he becomes part of how Barnaby navigates danger, because he understands the kind of people who chase money and thrills.

The tone is action-forward and playful. The danger is real, but the books lean into funny situations, oddball side characters, and a heroine who reacts like a normal person would, by panicking, swearing, and charging ahead anyway. Evanovich keeps scenes short and lets problems stack up until Barnaby is basically sprinting from one crisis to the next.

Motor Mouth keeps the racing element front and center, and Troublemaker pushes the story deeper into Miami’s underbelly, where the cases come with explosions, strange clues, and a sense that the next turn could flip everything.

The books can be read quickly and, mostly, independently, but starting with Metro Girl helps because it introduces Barnaby’s family dynamics and explains why she keeps getting dragged into danger. If you like Evanovich’s humor and want it paired with a road-trip pace and a Florida setting, this series hits that sweet spot.

Romance is part of the mix, but it’s not slow and dreamy. It’s attraction under stress, with two people trying to do the right thing while everything around them is loud and dangerous. Barnaby has to decide when to accept help, when to trust her instincts, and when to stop assuming she can fix her brother’s life by force of will alone.
