Series background & context

Sebastian Fitzek's Alexander Zorbach thrillers follow a former police officer whose search for answers brings him into cases involving abduction, manipulation and deeply personal threats. Zorbach works as a journalist in The Eye Collector and later as a private investigator in Playlist. His connection with Alina Gregoriev, a blind physiotherapist who claims an unusual ability to perceive her patients' pasts, links the stories. Their investigations put uncertain evidence against the urgent need to find people in danger.

The Eye Collector introduces a killer who turns kidnapping into a cruel timed game. After murdering a mother, he hides her child and gives the father forty-five hours to find the victim. The children's bodies are found missing an eye. Zorbach's interest in the case becomes dangerous when evidence points toward him, leaving him caught between investigating the crimes and the suspicions directed at his own involvement.

The search comes with a deadline.

Alina offers a possible lead that doesn't fit ordinary investigative methods. She believes that touching a patient can show her something of that person's past, and she may have treated the killer. That claim creates both hope and uncertainty. Zorbach needs information, yet an apparent insight isn't the same thing as evidence he can easily verify. The partnership gives the series a recurring tension between what someone seems to know and what can be established before time runs out.

The Eye Hunter returns to Alina through an investigation involving Dr. Suker, an eye surgeon who attacks women. The police lack the testimony and evidence they need and turn to her for help identifying a potential next victim. Her hesitation matters because assisting the case exposes her to further violence and manipulation. The medical setting turns professional skill into a source of danger, while the continuing characters carry the weight of their earlier experiences.

In Playlist, Zorbach is hired to find fifteen-year-old Feline Jagow, who disappeared on her way to school. A change to the music playlist she used online suggests that she may be communicating through songs. Deciphering those choices could reveal where she is being held or how to reach her. The familiar act of listening to music becomes a possible rescue message, drawing Zorbach toward another investigation in which interpreting a clue wrongly could have serious consequences.

Read The Eye Collector, The Eye Hunter and Playlist in that order. The cases are linked by Zorbach and Alina, and later stories refer back to the investigations that established their connection. These are dark psychological thrillers with violence and threats to vulnerable people. Their central attraction is the combination of a search against time and evidence that may conceal another layer of meaning, forcing the investigators to act before they can feel certain they understand it.
